On Pineapples !!

A little bird told me .............

Do you know that in the 1960's and 70's, Malaysia was one of the world's top pineapple producers ?

Pineapples are planted both for the fresh fruit market and also for the canning market
Varieties planted for the fresh fruit markets are Maspine,Josaphine and Mauritius (EngKee) whereas for the canning market are the Gandol and N36.
Discarded pineapple skin are used to generate cattle feed !
Currently Pahang has about 58ha of pineapple farms, Kelantan has the largest area - 309ha, followed by Terengganu with 169ha.
Malaysa imports pineapples from Thailand and Indonesia to meet domestic demand.


ECER- East Coast Economic Region is allocating 7,400 hectars in Pekan and Rompin for pineapple cultivation, with about 2,000 ha for the fresh fruit market and 5,000 hectars with varieties suitable for canning .

Josapine is a humble pineapple grown in Johore. It is a cross between a Sarawak and Johor variety.
To select a good pineapple, it must be of a darker yellow orange shade at the bottom and a lighter shade at the top. It must not sound hollow when you gently knock it.
Do you know that pineapple stem can be used o make chips?
To know more about pineapples, visit the Pineapple Museum in Pontian, Johor. At the museum, it traces the introducion of pineapple cultivation, events leading to its present status, biology of the plant,different varieties, planting methods and all else pertaining to Pineapples !!

To the Chinese, pineapple in Hokkien is ONG LAI - signifing prosperity. Pineapple tarts is popularly served during the Chinese New Year to symbolise prosperity.

Nutritionally, pineapples contain dietay fibre. It aids in the lowering of blood cholesterol, reducing risk of heart attack and diabetes. It is suitable for juice making and is rich in vitamin C.
Pineapples may cause heavy menstrual flow in some women. Thus pregnant women are traditionally advised against eating pineaapples to avoid miscarriages.
